What Schools Actually Require

When a child enters kindergarten, teachers assume a baseline of skills that many children with autism have not yet developed: responding to their name, sitting with a group for 10–15 minutes, following two- and three-step directions, transitioning between activities without major disruption, and initiating basic social interactions with peers.

ABA therapy, when delivered with school readiness as an explicit goal, systematically builds each of these skills before a child ever walks through a classroom door.

Core School Readiness Skills Targeted in ABA

Attending and group behavior: Children practice sitting at a table, tracking a speaker with their eyes, waiting their turn, and raising a hand before speaking. These seem simple but require significant shaping for many children with autism.

Following instructions: ABA begins with one-step instructions and systematically increases complexity. By school age, target skills include following novel two-step directions from an unfamiliar adult — a common challenge that can derail classroom participation.

Transitions: Moving from a preferred activity to a non-preferred one without a meltdown is a critical school skill. ABA uses visual schedules, first-then boards, and systematic reinforcement to make transitions predictable and manageable.

Peer interaction: Initiating play, responding to peer bids for attention, and taking turns are taught in structured sessions that gradually approach the naturalistic conditions of a real classroom.

Coordinating with Schools

PBS Midwest's BCBAs work directly with school teams — teachers, paraprofessionals, and special education coordinators — to ensure skills practiced in therapy are reinforced in the classroom. We develop Behavior Intervention Plans that translate seamlessly into IEP goals, and we provide staff training so the school environment supports continued progress.

Starting ABA therapy with a school preparation focus, ideally a year or more before kindergarten entry, gives children the best possible chance of participating meaningfully in general or special education settings.
