Task Avoidance Is Communication
When a child drops to the floor at the mention of homework, hides when it's time to brush their teeth, or throws materials at the start of a work session — they are communicating something. Often it's: "I don't know how to do this," "this feels overwhelming," or "I've learned that refusing gets me out of it."
Understanding task avoidance as communication — not defiance — is the first step toward addressing it effectively.
What Is Behavioral Momentum?
Behavioral momentum is an ABA principle borrowed from physics: objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Applied to behavior, it means that a child who has just complied with several easy, preferred requests is more likely to comply with a difficult or non-preferred one.
The technique works like this: before presenting a challenging task, a therapist or parent delivers three to five high-probability requests — things the child almost always does when asked, like "give me five," "touch your nose," or "grab your backpack." Each compliance earns immediate, enthusiastic reinforcement. Then, while the child is in a pattern of saying yes, the difficult request is introduced.
Why It Works
Several mechanisms explain behavioral momentum's effectiveness:
- History of reinforcement: Prior compliance primes the child's behavior toward compliance — the pattern is already established.
- Reduced anxiety: Easy tasks build confidence and reduce the physiological arousal that accompanies anticipated failure.
- Momentum carries forward: The behavioral pattern established by easy requests literally carries into the more difficult one.
Using Momentum at Home
Parents can apply momentum strategies during the most challenging transitions of the day. Before asking a child to start homework, ask them to help with something simple. Before requesting they get dressed, engage them in a brief preferred activity. The goal is not manipulation — it's creating the conditions where success is most likely.
