From Therapy Room to Kitchen Table

Behavioral momentum is a powerful clinical tool — but its full effect is only realized when the same principles are applied consistently outside of therapy sessions. Parents are in a unique position to make this happen: they are present for hundreds of interactions each day that a therapist never sees.

Learning to recognize and create momentum opportunities in daily routines is one of the highest-leverage skills a parent can develop.

Everyday Momentum Opportunities

Morning routines: Before asking your child to get dressed (often a challenging demand), ask them to put a toy away, get you a tissue, or "show me your dinosaur." Three quick compliances, three enthusiastic responses from you, then: "okay, now let's get your shirt on."

Mealtimes: If sitting at the table is hard, spend two minutes doing something fun together nearby — a quick puzzle, a song — then transition to the table while momentum is high.

Bath time: Bath refusal is common. Run a sequence of preferred body-part touch requests ("show me your ears, your nose, your belly") before moving into getting undressed and into the tub.

What Parents Often Get Wrong

The most common mistake is presenting the difficult demand first, getting refusal, then escalating — which creates a coercive cycle that makes the behavior worse over time. Momentum works in the opposite direction: success first, then challenge.

Another common error is using the same requests every time until they become rote and lose their reinforcing quality. Vary the high-p requests so they stay fresh and engaging.

Building the Habit

At PBS Midwest, we work with parents to identify the three or four daily routines where momentum would make the biggest difference and build specific sequences for each one. Over 4–6 weeks of consistent implementation, parents report that transitions they previously dreaded become noticeably smoother — not because the child has changed, but because the conditions for success have been deliberately engineered.
