About This Approach
Developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, the DIR (Developmental, Individual-difference, Relationship-based) Floortime model prioritizes emotional connection as the foundation for learning. Therapists literally get on the floor with the child, entering their world and following their lead. The goal is to open and close 'circles of communication' — back-and-forth exchanges that build shared attention, intentional problem-solving, and emotional engagement. At PBS Midwest, we integrate Floortime principles within our ABA framework to address the emotional and relational dimensions of development alongside skill acquisition.

Best Suited For
Children who struggle with emotional connection, joint attention, or the foundational developmental milestones that underpin social communication. Particularly valuable for children with a twice-exceptional profile or those for whom purely behavioral approaches have not yet built meaningful relational engagement.
