Parents who actively participate in ABA sessions and implement strategies at home see dramatically faster skill generalization in their children.

The 40-Hour Week Problem

Even the most intensive ABA program — 40 hours per week — leaves 128 waking hours where a child is not in a formal therapy session. What happens during those hours determines whether skills learned in therapy transfer into real life or remain confined to the therapy room.

This is why parent involvement is not a nice-to-have feature of PBS Midwest's approach. It is a core component of every program we run.

What Parent Training Looks Like

Parent training at PBS Midwest is structured, practical, and individualized. Rather than abstract lectures about ABA principles, we sit beside caregivers during sessions and show them exactly how to prompt a skill, deliver reinforcement, and respond to challenging behavior in the moment. We then observe as parents practice and provide feedback in real time.

Training covers:

The Generalization Advantage

When parents implement ABA strategies consistently across home, car rides, mealtimes, and community outings, something powerful happens: the child learns that the rules of the world are consistent, not just the rules of the therapy room. Skills generalize faster, maintain longer, and appear more naturally.

Children whose parents are active participants in ABA therapy typically meet their treatment goals in significantly less time than those in programs where therapy is treated as something that happens to the child in a separate space.

Finding the Right Balance

We understand that families are busy, and that adding "active therapy participation" to an already demanding schedule is not always easy. PBS Midwest's parent training is designed to be integrated into your existing routines — not added on top of them. A few deliberate moments each day, applied consistently, compound into meaningful progress over time.
